- What do you like best about your PROVINCE?
(Canada is SO huge and SO diverse both geographically and demographically, I know I could not speak for more than my own province with any amount of accuracy!)
From the people I like the culture - the old, traditional Island culture of kitchen parties, fiddlers, storytellers and the sense of pride that comes from living off the land and the sea. From the land I like the red soil, (PEI dirt really is red!) and I love the ocean.
- What do you not like? What do you think are the main problems your PROVINCE has to deal with?
The Island is extremely conservative - new ideas take a very long time to get used to, if it happens at all and it can be very frustrating. The main problem facing the Island today is a lack of connection. There was a farming revolution 50 years ago after WWII, thousands of small family farms turned into a few hundred huge mono-crop industrial farms within a few years. Islanders have always been farmers, it has shaped the culture for hundreds of years. All of a sudden it is gone and people seem at a loss of who they are and what to do.
- If you had to describe your PROVINCE to a blind person in just one sentence what would you say?
Sweating and tired after a day of digging you walk the dry, red clay path on a July afternoon, sun hot on your head, sweet smell of clover - the scent of honey - surrounding you accompanied by the gentle hum of bees - and then the
hateful whine of mosquitoes as you pass through a shady area - but as the parched clay turns to fire hot sand you sprint up the dune where the cooling wind immediately lifts the hair from your neck, filling your nostrils with
that tangy, salty sea spray and your ears with roaring - the ocean and what you came for: a refreshing swim.
- Hobbies:
I like to read and write, campfires with guitars are always good. I'm a bit of an amateur pastry chef and I play most sports but I don't like competing.
I'm happiest outside, even happier outside on the ocean and I'm always up for an adventure. My absolute favorite thing to do is ramble along the shore with a strong north wind.
- Favourite Meals:
The local seafood is good: fish and chips, mussels, clams, lobsters - we collect oysters right in our bay. Mom makes very good pasta with tomatosauce, among other things, but dessert is best and chocolate even better!
